HL Deb 11 May 1993 vol 545 c57WA
Lord Hylton

asked Her Majesty's Government:

Whether they will confirm or correct figures stating that Nuclear Electric made a pre-subsidy loss of £738 million in 1991–92 and that the total subsidy to Nuclear Electric in 1992 amounted to £1.282 billion; and whether subsidies should not be used to provide a trust fund for decommissioning costs.

Baroness Denton of Wakefield

In Nuclear Electric's annual report and accounts for 1991–92, the company made an operating profit before exceptional items of £482 million in 1991–92, after receipt of £1,265 million of premium income financed by the fossil fuel levy. Nuclear Electric provides in its accounts for the decommissioning of its power stations. The amount so provided in operating costs in 1991–92 was £66 million. The balance of provisions against future decommissioning costs at 31st March 1992 was £1,699 million.
