§ Mrs. Angela KnightTo ask the Secretary of State for Education what support will be given in mandatory awards to students in the academic year 1993–94.
§ Mr. BoswellWe propose the following increases in support for mandatory award holders from England and Wales, subject to parliamentary approval of the regulations to be laid in due course. Taken together with the increased rates of student loans which I announced on Friday 7 May,Official Report, col. 254–55, they will enable 408W the average student support to rise by 2.75 per cent. in the academic year 1993–94, thereby maintaining its value in real terms. We will increase the supplementary allowances payable as part of the mandatory award by 2.75 per cent. We will also adjust the parental and spouse contribution scales so that the assessed contribution from a parent or spouse whose residual income rises in line with average earnings will continue to fall in real terms. The main rates of maintenance grant will be held at 1992–93 levels.
I am placing in the Library details of the rates of grant, the supplementary allowances and the parental and spouse contribution rules.
