HL Deb 10 May 1993 vol 545 c50WA
Lord Hylton

asked Her Majesty's Government:

What information they have about recent legal action by the Government of Turkey against the People's Labour Party (HEP); and whether Turkey is complying in this matter with its obligation under the European Convention on Human Rights.

The Minister of State, Foreign and Commonwealth Office (Baroness Chalker of Wallasey)

The legal action referred to has been brought not by the Turkish Government but by the independent state prosecutor. We understand that the Constitutional Court has completed its hearings of the case and is expected to announce its verdict in due course. It is for the European Court of Human Rights to decide whether a State is fulfilling its obligations under the European Convention on Human Rights.
