HL Deb 06 May 1993 vol 545 c47WA
Lord Marlesford

asked Her Majesty's Government:

What policy implications they draw from the recent report of the Transport Research Laboratory which concludes: and "that there are no real factors that justify the exclusion of cyclists from pedestrian areas" and "that cycling can be more widely permitted without detriment to pedestrians" and that "it is important not to exclude cyclists from pedestrian areas and force them to use dangerous alternative routes".

The Earl of Caithness

The conclusions in the Transport Research Laboratory report on cycling in pedestrian areas support current guidance to local authorities. This is set out in the Department of Transport's Local Transport Note 1/87,Getting the Right Balance—Guidance on Vehicle Restriction in Pedestrian Zones.
