25. Mr. Dalyell

To ask the Secretary of State for Scotland what was the cost of the Touche Ross report on the costs of local government reform.

Mr. Stewart

The sum paid to Touche Ross for its report, the IPF survey of local authorities and subsequent work on the costs of local government reform was £55,000.

29. Mr. Nigel Griffiths

To ask the Secretary of State for Scotland what assessment he has made of the impact on trading standards and consumer protection depart-ments of his proposals for reorganising local government.

Mr. Stewart

A number of respondents to our recent consultation paper on local government reform have commented on the future of the trading standards service in a single-tier structure. We are giving careful consideration to all these comments.
