§ Mr. MorganTo ask the Secretary of State for Health what is the number and percentage of(a) general practices and (b) community medical officers in each family health services authority area in England who have reached the vaccination and immunisation higher and lower targets and booster targets as at the latest available date; and if she will make a statement on the combined impact of general practitioner and community medical officer efforts in this area on (i) percentage of all babies being immunised and vaccinated and (ii) incidence of the diseases being immunised and vaccinated against.
§ Mr. SackvilleThe target payments scheme applies only to general practitioners. Details are set out by family health service authority (FHSA) as at 1 April 1992 in the table.
All those in the national health service responsible for immunisation deserve great credit for their efforts during the past four years. The latest national immunisation coverage estimates show acceptance of 95 per cent., for diphtheria, tetanus and polio, 93 per cent. for measles, mumps and rubella, and 91 per cent. for whooping cough; well on the way towards our target of at least 95 per cent. coverage for all these diseases by 1995. Indigenous diphtheria and neonatal tetanus no longer occur, and even measles and whooping cough cases are becoming rare in general practice. No child in England and Wales has died from acute measles-related illness since 1989.
