HC Deb 29 March 1993 vol 222 cc47-8W
Mr. Redmond

To ask the Minister of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food when he will take steps to enforce the ban on the use of mineral hydrocarbons; and if he will make a statement.

Mr. Soames

The results of studies of mineral hydrocarbons are currently being examined by the scientific committees that advise Ministers on food safety issues. No decisions will be taken until this independent expert assessment has been completed and the committees' recommendations have been received.

Mr. Redmond

To ask the Minister of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food if he will list the food products which use mineral hydrocarbons in their manufacture.

Mr. Soames

I am aware that mineral hydrocarbons are used in the United Kingdom in the manufacture of base components for chewing gum and rind for whole pressed cheese. I am informed that certain other permitted uses have been discontinued. However, detailed information on remaining uses will be available when the independent expert committees that advise the Government on food safety have completed the examination of this subject on which they are currently engaged.
