HC Deb 26 March 1993 vol 221 c747W
Mr. Dewar

To ask the Chancellor of the Exchequer what is his estimate of the cost of mortgage interest tax relief in 1993–94 and the number of borrowers who will benefit from it.

Mr. Dorrell

The cost of mortgage interest tax relief is provisionally estimated to be £4.3 billion in 1993–94 based on the conventional assumption that interest rates remain at their current levels.

The estimated number of single people or married couples benefiting from mortgage interest relief in 1993–94 is 9.9 million.
