To ask the Secretary of State for Health, pursuant to her answer of 15 March,Official Report, column 11, what was the number of (a) NHS consultant oncologist posts in England and Wales and (b) women diagnosed to be suffering from breast cancer in 1981; what is the current oncologist ratio for women suffering from breast cancer in England and Wales; and what is the current five-year survival rate for women treated for breast cancer.

At 30 September 1981 there were 18 whole-time equivalent—wte—posts in England and Wales in medical oncology. In 1986 the ratio of wte consultants to patients treated for breast cancer was 1:869.
