HL Deb 23 March 1993 vol 544 cc10-1WA
Lord Tebbit

asked Her Majesty's Government:

How long after the ratification of the Treaty on European Union they expect it to be before paragraphs 5 and 8 of the Protocol on Certain Provisions Relating to the United Kingdom come into effect.

The Earl of Caithness

Paragraph 2 of the protocol makes clear that paragraphs 5 and 8 shall take effect if the United Kingdom notifies the Council that it does not intend to move to the third stage of economic and monetary union. Article 1 of the protocol requires the United Kingdom to notify the Council of its intentions in accordance with the timetable and procedure in Article 109j of the treaty.
