HC Deb 22 March 1993 vol 221 c478W
Ms Walley

To ask the Secretary of State for Transport what assessment has been made of the impact of increased lorry weights on London's roads and bridges, in terms of environmental impacts, including structural damage, and additional financial costs.

Mr. Norris

No assessment of the general environmental impact of increased lorry weights on London's roads and bridges has been made. On the Department's motorways and trunk roads in London, 125 structures have been subject to structural assessment. Some 580 structures are to be assessed as part of a rolling programme. Local authorities in London are responsible for a similar assessment programme in relation to their roads.

The Department chairs regular meetings with local authorities and structure owners in London to co-ordinate assessment work. These measures will ensure London's roads are able to safely carry existing and future traffic loads.
