To ask the Secretary of State for Scotland what is the cost of maintaining an individual at HM prisons in Scotland.

§ Lord James Douglas-Hamilton
The cost of maintaining an individual at HM prisons in Scotland in 1992–93, calculated as total expenditure on prisons, including capital, divided by average prisoner numbers, is approximately £25,400 per annum. Excluding capital expenditure, the cost is approximately £22,900 per individual per annum.
