Whether they will list the practical ways in which they have supported the 1,000 mile network of cycle routes in London.

About 96 per cent. of the network is on local roads which are the responsibility of the London borough councils. The remainder is on DoT trunk roads.

We are supporting the cycle network in the following ways:—

  • —where practicable, cycle routes on trunk roads and crossing points of the trunk road network are being provided by DoT;
  • —the criteria for transport supplementary grant have been amended so that cycling schemes on local authority roads which comprise or form part of a local WA75 safety scheme are eligible for grant. The cycling elements of bigger schemes are also eligible for grant if they reduce accidents on roads of more than local importance;
  • —DoT issues advice and guidance to boroughs on the design and construction of cycling facilities through local transport notes and traffic advisory leaflets;
  • —DoT is an active member of London Cycling Forum (LCF) who have developed the network and are responsible for it;
  • —DoT provide the venue for, and attend, the quarterly meetings of the London borough cycling officer group which was set up to discuss provision of the strategic cycle network and cycle matters in general;
  • —DoT have arranged and paid for the artwork and printing of maps showing the cycle network;
  • —DoT co-hosted a seminar in November 1990 with the London planning advisory committee to promote the 1,000 mile network.
