HL Deb 15 March 1993 vol 543 c74WA
Lord Marlesford

asked Her Majesty's Government:

What proportion of car journeys in London are estimated to be five miles or less and 10 miles or less respectively and in what proportion of journeys the car contains only one person.

The Earl of Caithness

In 1985–86, the latest year for which estimates are available, the national travel survey found that 67 per cent. of car driver journey stages by London residents were five miles or less in length and 86 per cent were of 10 miles or less in length. The car contained only one person in 58 per cent. of the five miles or less journeys, and 59 per cent. of the 10 miles or less journeys. These estimates include journeys by London residents outside London but exclude journeys by non-London residents in London.
