HC Deb 15 March 1993 vol 221 cc101-2W
Mr. Kirkwood

To ask the Chancellor of the Exchequer what evidence he has on the level of public satisfaction with the present arrangements made by the Inland Revenue; and what plans he has to monitor how well the Revenue is meeting taxpayers' needs.

Mr. Dorrell

A survey carried out in June 1992 by Research International on behalf of the Inland Revenue found that 65 per cent. of employed and self-employed taxpayers were satisfied with the service they received from the Inland Revenue.

The Inland Revenue plans to survey other taxpaying groups to establish their present satisfaction levels and service preferences. Their intention is to repeat the surveys at appropriate intervals as an aid to monitoring performance in meeting taxpayers' service needs.

Mr. Kirkwood

To ask the Chancellor of the Exchequer what was the amount of unpaid taxes written off by the Inland Revenue for the last five years for which figures are available.

Mr. Dorrell

The total amounts of unpaid taxes written off by the Inland Revenue for the last five years were:

(£ thousand)
1987 333,294
1988 629,219
1989 530,901
1990 568,827
1991 883,923
