HC Deb 10 March 1993 vol 220 cc581-2W
Mr. Alex Carlile

To ask the Secretary of State for Education how many full-time music teachers were employed in state schools in 1979, 1985, 1989 and the latest available date.

Mr. Forth

Information on the numbers of full-time music teachers is available from school staffing surveys. The four secondary school staffing surveys show the following numbers of full-time teachers who taught music at some point in the survey week and, regardless of whether they taught any music in the survey week, the number of full-time teachers who held a post A-level qualification in the subject:—

Maintained Secondary Schools in England
1977 1984 1988 1992
Number of full-time teachers teaching some music (thousands) 10.4 9.3 7.1 5.8
Number of full-time teachers with a post 'A' level qualification in music (thousands) 14.3 11.6 9.2 7.6

The primary school staffing survey carried out in 1987 showed that 15,200 full-time teachers teaching in English primary schools had a post A-level qualification in music and that 18,600 full-time teachers had responsibility for curriculum leadership in music.
