HC Deb 10 March 1993 vol 220 cc605-6W
Mr. Peter Bottomley

To ask the Secretary of State for Health in which publication, speech or statement her Department has described how it takes account of the family perspective and the life cycle in the targets, activities and statistics of her Department.

Mr. Yeo

The role of the family is discussed in a range of departmental publications, speeches and statements. My right hon. Friend the Secretary of State for Health discussed the role of the family at length in the National Childrens Homes George Thomas Society lecture in 1992.

Mr. Peter Bottomley

To ask the Secretary of State for Health if she will make a statement on how her Department takes account of the family perspective and the family life cycle in the targets, activities and statistics of her Department.

Mr. Yeo

Family perspective and life cycle are considered in relation to a wide range of departmental activity, including: many aspects of the implementation of the Children Act 1989 and of care in the community policies; improving parental awareness of drug and alcohol abuse; grant aid for United Kingdom voluntary organisations providing help and support for families and children, and for the United Kingdom Association for the United Nations Year of the Family (scheduled for 1994) and support for family members in their role as carers. Statistics collected by the Department also reflect this emphasis, for example: statistics on local authority services to children identify family placements. The Office of Population Censuses and Surveys also collects information on a variety of aspects of family life; for example: the General Household Survey, the Family Resources Survey, the Labour Force Survey and the census.
