HC Deb 09 March 1993 vol 220 cc469-70W
Mr. Redmond

To ask the Secretary of State for Transport, pursuant to his answer of 3 March,Official Report, column 143, if he will list the location, cost and duration of the local road improvement schemes funded by his Department in the City of Westminster since 1979.

Mr. Norris

Between the years 1979 and 1986, road improvement schemes in the city of Westminster were the responsibility of the Greater London council or Westminster city council. The information on schemes during this period is not readily available and can only be provided at disproportionate cost. Since 1986 local roads have been the sole responsibility of Westminster city council. The following amounts of expenditure have been accepted for transport supplementary grant for the relevant financial years:—

£ million
1986–87 1.016
1987–88 0.766
1988–89 1.070
1989–90 1.800
1990–91 1.384
1991–92 2.742
1992–93 5.852

One major scheme, costing more than £1 million in total, is included in these figures. This is the A404 Harrow Road/Ladbroke Grove widening scheme being carried out jointly by Westminster council and the Royal borough of Kensington and Chelsea. The following amounts of expenditure have been accepted for this scheme in Westminster for the relevant financial years:—

£ million
1986–87 0.700
1987–88 0.434
1988–89 0.650
1989–90 1.300
1990–91 0.922
1991–92 0.855
1992–93 1.015

The start of this scheme has been delayed. Grant has been paid in anticipation of an earlier start date. The likely duration of the scheme is six years.

Other expenditure accepted for TSG support was for various minor works, under £1 million in total cost. These are paid as a block grant and are not scheme specific. Details of such schemes are not readily available.
