Mrs. Ann Taylor

To ask the Secretary of State for Education (1) when the Council for the Accreditation of Teacher Education was invited to consider the discussion paper "Curriculum Organisation and Classroom Practice in Primary Schools" published by his Department; and if he will make a statement;

(2)when the Council for the Accreditation of Teacher Education submitted its report to him on its consideration of the discussion paper "Curriculum Organisation and Classroom Practice in Primary Schools"; and whether he will publish the report;

(3)what recommendations were made to him by the Council for the Accreditation of Teacher Education arising from its consideration of the discussion paper "Curriculum Organisation and Classroom Practice in Primary Schools".

Mr. Forth

The then Secretary of State wrote to the chairman of the Council for the Accreditation of Teacher Education in February 1992 to seek the council's advice on the implications for the initial training of primary teachers of the report on curriculum organisation and classroom practice in primary schools. CATE submitted interim advice to my right hon. Friend in July 1992, emphasising the need for further work. Following the two recent reports on primary education from the National Curriculum Council and from Ofsted, my right hon. Friend has now requested further advice from CATE with a view to issuing in April, for consultation, proposals for the reform of training for primary teachers.
