HC Deb 05 March 1993 vol 220 cc297-8W
Mr. Simon Hughes

To ask the Secretary of State for Transport if he will list those road schemes currently proposed by his Department which will have effects on(a) sites of special interest, (b) areas of outstanding natural beauty and (c) national parks; and if he will make a statement.

Mr. Kenneth Carlisle

We place great emphasis on environmental considerations when assessing road proposals. Wherever possible roads are kept away from protected areas such as sites of special scientific interest, areas of outstanding natural beauty, and national parks. We consult statutory environmental organisations from the earliest stages of route development to ensure that impacts on protected areas, where unavoidable, are limited, and appropriate mitigation measures put in place, including the creation of new habitats.
