HC Deb 05 March 1993 vol 220 c298W
Mrs. Dunwoody

To ask the Secretary of State for Transport what estimate his Department has made of the increase of carbon dioxide emissions from transport from 1985 to 2000; and if he will make a statement.

Mr. Kenneth Carlisle

In 1985 the transport sector emitted 26 million tonnes of carbon (calculated by source). It is estimated that in 2000 transport emissions will be between 38 and 40 million tonnes of carbon (Source: Warren Spring laboratory).

Mrs. Dunwoody

To ask the Secretary of State for Transport what percentage of(a) energy consumption and (b) carbon dioxide emissions transport was responsible for in the most recent period for which an estimate has been made; what percentage of this was attributed to roads; and if he will make a statement.

Mr. Kenneth Carlisle

In 1991 the transport sector accounted for 22 per cent. of total inland energy consumption of primary fuels and equivalents (Source: Department of Trade and Industry). Road transport accounted for 80 per cent. of the sector's energy consumption. In 1990 24 per cent. of carbon dioxide emissions, by end user, were allocated to the transport sector, of which 90 per cent. came from road transport (Source: Warren Spring laboratory).
