To ask the Secretary of State for Northern Ireland how many babies were born by Caesarean section in hospitals in Northern Ireland during each year since 1970; and if he will make a statement.

The figures for 1971–1986 and 1991 and 1992 are given in the table. Equivalent information is not available for the years 1987–1990 when adjustments were being made to the data collection process.

The figures in the table include both live and still-births.
