§ Mr. SackvilleSouth West Thames regional health authority appointed Mr. John Wilby as chief executive of the London ambulance service on 1 August 1990 following a recruitment exercise for the post including a national newspaper advertisement, assessment and candidate selection. The final selection panel comprised Baroness Cumberlege, the chairman and Mr. Chris Spry regional general manager of South West Thames regional health authority, Mr. James Harris, then chairman of the London ambulance board, David Rennie, chairman of Harrow DHA and John Smale, personnel director of the brewing division of the Guinness Group.
