HC Deb 03 March 1993 vol 220 c169W
Ms. Lynne

To ask the Secretary of State for Health what studies have been undertaken in relation to inner city areas of routine haemoglobin estimation by capillary sampling of children under five years using a haemoglobinometer.

Mr. Sackville

The Department of Health has not undertaken or funded any such studies. An expert sub-group of the Committee on Medical Aspects of Food Policy is currently reviewing all aspects of the weaning diet including the incidence and prevention of iron-deficiency anaemia in children in this age group.

The national diet and nutrition survey of pre-school children is at present collecting data on the dietary intakes and nutritional status of children in Great Britain aged 14½ –4½ years, including haemoglobin levels.
