§ Mr. Nelson[holding answer 2 March 1993]: The European Commission has proposed that Northern Ireland, Merseyside and the Highlands and Islands region of Scotland be granted objective I status for the period 1994 to 1999, but the final decision is to be taken by the Council of Ministers in the context of the review of the structural funds regulations. GDP per head figures for Cornwall and the above regions are given below for the year 1989, the latest available on a consistent basis. Also provided is an index comparing these areas with the European Community average for the period 1988–90, on a "purchasing power" basis.
