HL Deb 01 March 1993 vol 543 c25WA
Lord Judd

asked Her Majesty's Government:

Whether they have had any recent meetings with representatives from the opposition parties within Malawi; and whether the Government of Malawi is allowing these parties to hold public meetings and to operate without fear of arrest and harassment.

Baroness Chalker of Wallasey

British officials have met with representatives of the political pressure groups from Malawi. Public meetings have been held but some restrictions have been applied. We trust that the recently published referendum regulations will ensure that future meetings are held in an atmosphere that is free from harassment and intimidation.
