HL Deb 17 June 1993 vol 546 c83WA
Lord Hylton

asked Her Majesty's Government:

What action UNPROFOR is taking, or will take, to prevent continued casualties among civilians, and especially the killing of children, by the forces still besieging Sarajevo.

Baroness Chalker of Wallasey

Sarajevo is one of the six Safe Areas established under UN Security Council Resolution (SCR) 824 of 6th May. SCR 836 of 4th June expanded the mandate of UNPROFOR in Bosnia to include deterring attacks against the Safe Areas. The UN Secretary-General believes that initial implementation of this resolution will require an additional 7,500 UNPROFOR troops. Identification of potential new troop contributors is under way in New York.
