HL Deb 17 June 1993 vol 546 c83WA
Lord Hylton

asked Her Majesty's Government:

What examination they have made of the United Nations Convention on the Prevention and Punishment of the Crime of Genocide (1951) in relation to recent events in Croatia and Bosnia; whether they agree that genocide has occurred; and if so, what actions they intend to take.

Baroness Chalker of Wallasey

The possible commission of genocide in the former Yugoslavia is the subject of proceedings brought by Bosnia-Herzegovina against the Federal Republic of Yugoslavia (FRY) (Serbia and Montenegro) in the International Court of Justice (ICJ). The court indicated certain provisional measures on 8th April 1993, but has not yet taken a position on the question of whether genocide has been committed in Bosnia.
