HC Deb 14 June 1993 vol 226 c461W
Mr. Dalyell

To ask the Secretary of State for National Heritage in what form information is available to his Department as to the circumstances in which the gifts of Sir Leonard Woolley of archaelogical objects found at Ur of the Chaldees and other sites in Mesopotamia came into the possession of the British museum.

Mr. Brooke

All the results of the excavation carried out by Sir Leonard Woolley are published in 10 volumes. Archives and records are held by the department of western Asiatic antiquities of the British museum and can be inspected on request. The records relating to the financing and organisation of the expedition, and correspondence with the Iraqi authorities, are in the museum's central archive and are also accessible under the terms of the Public Records Act. If the hon. Member would like any further information on this matter, the director of the British museum would be happy to supply it.
