Dr. David Clark

To ask the Secretary of State for Defence what reassessment he has made of his policy relating to the withdrawal of the British garrison from Belize as a result of recent events in Guatemala.

Mr. Hanley

Recent events in Guatemala have been of an internal nature and there is no evidence that Guatemala's attitude to relations with Belize has changed as a result. Whilst we are monitoring the situation, we see no reason to change our plans for the garrison.

To ask the Secretary of State for Defence what communications he has had with the Belize Government concerning recent events in Guatemala.

Prime Minister Price visited the United Kingdom on 9 and 10 June and had discusisons with my right hon. Friend the Prime Minister, my right hon. and learned Friend the Secretary of State for Defence and my hon. Friend the Minister of State at the Foreign and Commonwealth Office. Recent events in Guatemala were among the subjects discussed.
