§ Mr. GoodladWe are deeply concerned by the recent reports of arrests and disturbances in Tibet. EC ambassadors, who visited Tibet on 17–23 May, raised the reported arrests with the authorities there and urged that those detained be released. On 1 June the presidency issued, on behalf of the Community and member states, a public statement reiterating concern about the recent events and the general human rights situation in Tibet and calling for dialogue without preconditions between the Chinese authorities and the representatives of the Tibetans including the Dalai Lama.
