HC Deb 07 June 1993 vol 226 c56W
Mr. Clifton-Brown

To ask the Secretary of State for Health how many people have been detained under section 2 of the Mental Health Act 1983 in each of the last five years.

Mr. Bowis

Formal admissions to national health service hospitals, private nursing homes and special hospitals under section 2 of the Mental Health Act 1983 in each of the five years for which data are available are shown in the table.

Year Section 2 of the Mental Health Act 1983, England
1985 7,902
1986 8,387
1987–88 8,867
1988–89 9,517
1989–90 9,534

The numbers are of admissions, not persons, as a person could be admitted more than once during the year. Data for 1987–88 onwards are on a financial year basis.
