HC Deb 27 July 1993 vol 229 cc1007-8W
Mr. Simon Coombs

To ask the Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs if he will make a statement on Her Majesty's Government's policy towards Sudan; and what representations they are making to the Government of Sudan in relation to this policy.

Mr. Douglas Hogg

We have many concerns. Chief among them is the failure to settle the civil war in the south, the continuing humanitarian crisis in many parts of the country and persistent reports of human rights abuses. We take every suitable opportunity to raise these issues with the Government of Sudan, both bilaterally, and with our EC partners and other donor states. A key role is played by Her Majesty's ambassador to Sudan, Mr. Peter Streams, who has tackled skilfully the difficult task of conveying our concerns directly to the authorities in Khartoum. Indeed, Mr. Streams has shown a high degreee of professionalism and competence in carrying out his duties in a testing environment.
