Members of Parliament or former Members of the European Parliament who have been appointed since January 1987 by his Department to quasi-autonomous non-governmental organisations, health boards or NHS hospital trusts; and if he will list in each case the title of the post, the salary, the duration of the appointment and the party which each former Member, former MEP, or candidate represented.
§ Mr. LangThe information held centrally by my Department does not show whether appointees were former hon. Members of this House, former Members of the European Parliament, candidates at any parliamentary election or the spouse of an hon. Member, former hon. Member or former Member of the European Parliament. As far as I am aware, the only appointee to a Scottish Office body listed in the Cabinet Office publication "Public Bodies" who is the spouse of an hon. Member of the House is Mrs. Kathleen Dalyell, wife of the hon. Member for Linlithgow (Mr. Dalyell). She is a member of the Ancient Monuments Board for Scotland and her appointment runs from 1 June 1992 to 31 December 1996; it is unsalaried. Mrs. Deirdre Hutton, wife of the former MEP for the South of Scotland, is a member of the Parole Board for Scotland. Her appointment runs from 1 June 1993. It is unsalaried, but a fee is paid.
§ Mr. McLeishTo ask the Secretary of State for Scotland if he will list the names of individuals who(a) are spouses of hon. Members, (b) are members of the 976W House of Lords, (c) are spouses of members of the House of Lords and (d) have been party candidates for Parliament, indicating for which party, who have been appointed since 1987 to quasi-autonomous non-governmental organisations, giving in each case the title of the post, any salary payable and the duration of the appointment.
§ Mr. Lang[holding answer 26 July 1993]: The information covers the Scottish Office bodies listed in the Cabinet Office publication "Public Bodies". The information is at 1 September 1992 and does not include appointments as justices of the peace, appointments to children's panels or appointments which expired before that date, details of which are not held centrally and could be obtained only at disproportionate cost.
The information on appointments which I make is as follows:
(a) Mrs. Kathleen Dalyell, wife of the hon. Member for Linlithgow, is, as far as I am aware, the only spouse of a Member of the House who currently holds an appointment to a Scottish Office non-departmental public body. She is a member of the Ancient Monuments Board for Scotland and her present appointment commenced on 1 June 1992 and runs to 31 December 1996; Mrs. Joan Mackenzie, widow of the former hon. Member for Rutherglen, is a member of the Greater Glasgow health board. Her appointment runs from 1 April 1993 to 31 March 1997. Health board members receive remuneration of £5,000 per annum.
(b) the following members of the House of Lords hold appointments on Scottish Office bodies: Lord Macfarlane of Bearsden is a member of the board of trustees of the National Galleries of Scotland; his appointment runs from 1 April 1990 to 31 March 1994. The right hon. the Lord Cameron of Lochbroom is a member of the Edinburgh new town conservation committee; his appointment runs from 1 February 1991 to 31 January 1996. Lord Goold is a member of the Scottish hospital endowment research trust; his appointment runs from 1 April 1990 to 31 March 1996. Viscount Thurso is a member of the Central Advisory Committee on Justices of the Peace (Scotland). His appointment runs from 30 May 1991 to 15 May 1995. The Earl of Crawford and Balcarres is chairman of the board of trustees of the National Library of Scotland. The appointment runs from 14 November 1990. Baroness Carnegy of Lour was a member of the Scottish Economic Council until 31 January 1993.
Until his death recently, the Marquess of Bute was chairman of the trustees of the National Museums of Scotland. All the above appointments are or were unsalaried;
(c) the only spouse of a member of the House of Lords holding appointment to a Scottish Office body is Lady Sanderson, wife of Lord Sanderson of Bowden, who is a member of Borders health board. Health board members receive remuneration of £5,000 per annum.
(d) since information on the political affiliations of appointees is not held centrally, I have no record of appointees who may have been parliamentary candidates.

Members of the House who have been appointed since 1987 to quasi-autonomous non-governmental organisations; and 977W if he will list in each case the title of the post, the salary, the duration of the appointment and the party which each represented as an hon. Member.
§ Mr. Lang[holding answer 26 July 1993]: No former Members of Parliament who ceased to be Members of the House in 1987 and 1992 currently hold appointments on bodies for which my Department has responsibility.
