HC Deb 27 July 1993 vol 229 c898W
Mr. Hall

To ask the Secretary of State for the Environment what specific measures are being introduced at Fiddlers Ferry power station to ensure that sulphur dioxide emissions are reduced in line with the European Community directive requiring large combustion plants to cut sulphur dioxide emission to 50 per cent. of 1980 levels by 2000.

Mr. Yeo

The Council directive on the limitation of emissions of certain pollutants into the air from large combustion plants is delivered by the United Kingdom's programme and national plan for reducing emissions of sulphur dioxide and oxides of nitrogen from existing large combustion plants.

Under the programme and plan, the operator of Fiddlers Ferry power station, PowerGen, is given a company wide quota for each year for sulphur dioxide emissions for allocation to individual stations. As limits are not set for individual stations, measures to be used to control emissions of sulphur dioxide are not specified.

Limits are set by Her Majesty's inspectorate of pollution to secure its wider objectives under part I of the Environmental Protection Act 1990.
