HL Deb 26 July 1993 vol 548 c89WA
Earl Russell

asked Her Majesty's Government:

Between how many people (including children) the 12.3 per cent. of GDP spent on social security was divided, and what percentage of the British population the recipients constitute.

The Parliamentary Under-Secretary of State, Department of Social Security (Lord Henley)

Table 13 ofThe Growth of Social Security provides information on the numbers receiving particular benefits. These statistics detail the numbers of recipients of particular benefits. The overlaps between benefits are large with many recipients receiving two or more benefits. There are no records of the numbers of these multi-benefit recipients.

Earl Russell

asked Her Majesty's Government:

What is their estimate of the PSBR implication if 30 per cent. of lone parents at present on income support were in full-time employment, after allowance for childcare costs.

Lord Henley

The information requested is not available. There are many relevant factors which are too complex and variable to permit accurate estimates.
