HC Deb 26 July 1993 vol 229 c626W
Mr. Peter Bottomley

To ask the Secretary of State for the Home Department what was the cost of custody for Jason Georgiou; for what period he was held in custody; and if he will list the prosecution witnesses.

Mr. Peter Lloyd

Responsibility for this matter has been delegated to the director general of the prison service, who has been asked to arrange for a reply to be given.

Letter from Mr. D. Lewis to Mr. Peter Bottomley, dated 26 July 1993: The Home Secretary has asked me to reply to your recent Question about the costs of holding Jason Georgiou in custody and the period for which he was held. Jason Georgiou was held at Belmarsh Prison from 27 October 1992 until 30 April 1993 when he was transferred to Brixton Prison where he remained until his release on 12 July 1993. We do not collect costs of individual prisoners, but the average cost of holding a person in custody for this period in local and remand prisons would have been £17,197 at 93/4 prices. I regret that we are unable to furnish you with details of the prosecution witnesses in the case since the Lord Chancellors Department have advised that none of them were called to give evidence and therefore their details are not a matter of public record.
