asked Her Majesty's Government:

Whether the language of the communique issued after the Tokyo Summit had to be softened as compared with that of the G7 Summit at Munich in 1992 because Japan refused to repeat its previous commitment to indefinite extension of the non-proliferation treaty.

Like other Members of the G7, the Japanese Government agreed to the political declaration of the Tokyo Summit which repeated the support given to indefinite extension of the non-proliferation treaty (NPT) at last year's summit in Munich in the following terms: "We reiterate the objectives of universal adherence to the NPT as well as the treaty's indefinite extension in 1995 and nuclear arms reduction.
