HL Deb 21 July 1993 vol 548 c45WA
Lord Hylton

asked Her Majesty's Government:

Whether progress is being made to secure humane conditions and early release for Mr. Simon Dunn, Mr. Paul Ride and Mr. Michael Wainwright, British citizens, and Mr. Kai Sondermann (German), serving long sentences in Iraq for technical offences; and what international support they have received to this end.

Baroness Chalker of Wallasey

Mr. Wainwright, Mr. Ride and Mr. Dunn are detained in reasonably humane conditions. Two British officials recently visited them and Mr. Sondermann and reported them well and in good spirits. The Russian Embassy in Baghdad visits regularly to take in food and prison comforts, and check on their health. We have pressed for their early release through the Secretary-General of the United Nations, friendly countries with links with Iraq, and EC Foreign Ministers.
