HL Deb 15 July 1993 vol 548 c27WA
Lord Hylton

asked Her Majesty's Government:

What international agreements and conventions are being breached by the action of Israel in separating occupied East Jerusalem from adjoining territories, and what remedies they have in mind for this situation.

Baroness Chalker of Wallasey

Our position on the status of Jerusalem remains clear. We do not recognise Israeli sovereignty. We consider Israel's annexation of East Jerusalem as illegal. The situation in the Occupied Territories including the problems caused by the separation of East Jerusalem from the rest of the Occupied Territories underlines the importance of the peace process begun in Madrid in 1991, and the need for a negotiated settlement. We are urging all parties to make early and visible progress.
