HC Deb 09 July 1993 vol 228 c308W
Mr. Kevin Hughes

To ask the President of the Board of Trade (1) what proportion of miners leaving the industry in each year since 1989–90 went on a retraining scheme on leaving the industry;

(2) what proportion of miners leaving the industry in each year since 1989–90 went on (a) a training scheme funded through the job and career change scheme and (b) a Government training scheme.

Mr. Eggar

British Coal Enterprise has advised us that of the 58,018 former British Coal employees registered for assistance with them since 1989–90, 13.1 per cent., 7,586, have entered retraining. These figures are detailed on a year-by-year basis, with information given on those who went on the job and career change scheme and those who have taken other retraining. Other retraining includes Government schemes and further education support by local education authority grants.
