To ask the Chancellor of the Exchequer, pursuant to his answer of 27 May,Official Report, column 663, what information he has as to the level of import penetration for manufacturers in (a) the United Kingdom, (b) Germany and (c) France, in (i) 1973, (ii) 1979 and (iii) June 1989.

Figures for United Kingdom manufactured import penetration in 1979 and 1989 have been published in table 15.10 of the "Monthly Digest of Statistics". Figures for 1973 were published in an article in the August 1977 edition of "Economic Trends", which also described the basis of the estimates. Corresponding figures for other countries can be approximated using data published in "OECD Statistics of Foreign Trade" and "OECD National Accounts Volume 2". These publications are all available from the Library of the House.
