HC Deb 26 January 1993 vol 217 c619W
Mr. Cryer

To ask the Chancellor of the Exchequer if the travel and office allowances for Members of the European Parliament will be treated for tax purposes in the same way as for hon. Members.

Mr. Dorrell

A ruling of the European Court of Justice in 1981 said that expense allowances paid by the European Parliament to its Members are not liable to United Kingdom tax. That ruling does not apply to Members of this House.
