(2) if she will make a statement outlining those steps which have been taken by her Department since 9 April 1992 specifically to encourage employment in the United Kingdom manufacturing industry; and what future action she intends to take to assist the manufacturing industry.

Mr. McLoughlin

The overall policy of the Department is to promote a free and flexible labour market that is designed to help encourage employment in all sectors. In addition, the Department provides a range of employment and training programmes and local initiatives, through the employment service and training and enterprise councils to help people increase their skills, and equip themselves for work in all sectors including manufacturing. From April 1993 this range of measures is being enhanced and expanded.
