HC Deb 22 January 1993 vol 217 c464W
Mr. McMaster

To ask the Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs if he will make a statement on his policy regarding consultation with Amnesty International; how many times he has met representatives of the organisation in the past 12 months; what action he has taken following those representations; and if he will make a statement.

Mr. Douglas Hogg

Consultations with Amnesty International are valued by us. My right hon. Friend the Foreign Secretary last met representatives of Amnesty in September 1992; in addition I addressed representatives of non-governmental organisations (including Amnesty) on 18 January, and Amnesty had a general discussion with my right hon. Friend the Prime Minister on 20 January. I attended that meeting. Information received from Amnesty complements Government monitoring of human rights abuse, and therefore contributes to the formulation of policy.
