HC Deb 11 January 1993 vol 216 c562W
Mrs. Mahon

To ask the Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs what representations the British Government are making to the Government of Turkey on the recognition of the rights of minorities and people of non-Turkish origin.

Mr. Lennox-Boyd

We are in regular contact with the Turkish Government on the subject of human rights.

The issue was more recently discussed during the visit of the Turkish Prime Minister in November. Mr. Demirel reiterated his Government's commitment to their programme of reforms which aims at improving human rights, including those of members of minorities, and increasing democratisation in the country.

We welcome this commitment on the part of the Turks and look forward to the early implementation of the Government's programme.
