HC Deb 11 January 1993 vol 216 c566W
Mr. Llew Smith

To ask the President of the Board of Trade, pursuant to his reply to the hon. Member for Cambridge (Mrs. Campbell), 4 November,Official Report, column 308, what will be the proportional increase over current stockpiles of (a) reprocessed uranium and (b) plutonium by 2000 over the current stockpiles; and to what use the additional plutonium and uranium to which he refers will be put.

Mr. Eggar

The quantities of uranium and plutonium that will arise from the reprocessing in the thermal oxide reprocessing plant of spent fuel from nuclear power stations in the United Kingdom represents some 20 per cent. of stocks currently held by British Nuclear Fuels plc on behalf of the generating companies as owners of the material. It is expected that the material will ultimately be burnt in reactors to generate electricity.
