HC Deb 11 January 1993 vol 216 c566W
Mr. Llew Smith

To ask the President of the Board of Trade what resources have been made available to the British Coal Corporation to assist in the retention of methane gas from mines to avoid adding to the release of greenhouse gases.

Mr. Eggar

The process of mining frees the methane contained in coal; for reasons of mine safety, it has to be released from the mines. British Coal work to the practical limits of current technology and make use of about 10 per cent. of this methane. Availability of finance is not a limitation.
