General dental practitioners are independent contractors and, as such, they are free to decide how much of their time they wish to devote to NHS work and how many patients they wish to have on their lists. The figures on the number of dentists practising in Wales as at 30 September 1992 are as follows:

During that period, 47 dentists joined the dental lists and are offering a full range of NHS services.
