HC Deb 25 February 1993 vol 219 cc699-700W
Mr. Morgan

To ask the Secretary of State for Wales how many general dental practitioners in Wales in each area health authority are offering to provide NHS treatment to existing and new patients from 1 April; how many are offering NHS treatment to existing but not to new patients; and how many are offering no NHS treatment at all from 1 April.

Mr. Gwilym Jones

The information is not available centrally in the form requested. General dental practitioners are independent contractors and, as such, they are free to decide how much of their time they wish to devote to NHS work and how many patients they wish to have on their lists. The figures on the number of dentists practising in Wales as at 30 September 1992 are as follows:

Returns from family health services authorities in Wales indicate that 25 general dental practitioners gave written notice to have their name removed from dental lists between 1 August 1992 and 12 February 1993. During that period, 47 dentists joined the dental lists and are offering a full range of NHS services.
