Ms. Harman

To ask the Secretary of State for Transport how many cars were registered for ownership in a company's name in each year since 1973–74; and what estimate he has of the number of people who had such cars in each year.

Information on the registration of cars under a company name is not available before 1976. For the years since 1976 the figures for Great Britain are as shown in the table.

These figures do not include self-employed people who use their cars for business purposes. It is estimated that in recent years there have been some 2 million people in this category.
